Home * Decentralizing

We started our better than organic mushroom farm in the heart of BK in the winter of 2018, turning around a valiant operation that was going out of business for the sake of food security, access, and education. During the first COVID lockdown, tenants in the building of the grow space got out of hand and dangerous. We counted our blessings as we demolished this vital space and embraced a reality outside the City, with family living in the North Fork. Now we have three grow spaces, one in Mattituck, the other in Ellenville, and Crown Heights! We’ve trained other customers to host micro-growing operations, for our decentralized co-op, and invite you to join in this beautiful and empowering learning-nurturing-in-action experience <3

If you would like to join as a grower, market vendor, distributor – PLEASE get in touch!

According to Cornell’s Urban Ag extension / Small Farms program, as of 2019 we were officially the “first” and “only mushroom farm in the 5 boroughs”.  We are honored to serve the NYC area with the highest quality mushrooms. Along with a growing demand, other farms are popping up, some backed by big VC $ and some with humble beginnings like ours – the more the merrier! We are training new growers to join our coop as we set up new grow spaces beyond our initial location in the heart of BK. Around the same time as Cornell’s inclusion of our operation, Smallhold came on the scene, which somehow did not “count” as a farm as they had taken an “appliance” route of cultivation (so technically we squeaked in as the “first” proper “farm”). Ironically one of the founders of Smallhold and us share history prior to mushroom farming, as we shared volunteers for the first two rooftop farms in NYC, “Homegrown” and “Brooklyn Grange“. And so the urban farming saga continues, far beyond our two intertwined roots <3

THE PIONEERING RESTAURANTS

¡Why our mushrooms rock!

Organic mushrooms are the best alternative to healthy organic meat – especially the varieties we grow which are rich in complete proteins and B vitamins.   They are packed with other essential vitamins, compounds and minerals that support healthy individuals.  Mushrooms are full of unique flavors and textures, are easy and quick to prepare.  We took on this farm as we saw it’s amazing potential as a great asset for the city, for food security and for general health.  We are family owned and run by a collective of long time friends who came together through their passion in urban farming and sustainability.

Storehouses, Co-ops, and Topsoil

We are a “Storehouse Co-op”, a cooperative business that is part of a larger network that shares vital resources for public benefit, called a Storehouse. A Storehouse is a Bahá’í institution which has been in development all over the world for over 170 years. One of the most developed Storehouse networks called FUNDAEC started in Colombia 40 years ago and now boasts 150,000 farmers. One of us met a FUNDAEC founder, who encouraged us to start such a network around NYC. For the last 8 years we have been focused on making such a network, grounded in top soil building and regenerative practices on all levels. We are also inspired by Nature, and from this grass roots, person-to-person community of practitioners, participants, and customers, we are creating the beginnings of such a new economy around the bioregion of NYC.
